Dear Wifie
Just a line to let you know that I am in the best of health at present hoping this will find you all the same at home. We are having a fairly good time here just now holding New Year I was at 2 dinners last night and going to 3 more today I dont know how I am going to manage but will have to make it somehow or burst in the attempt. I hope you all had a very happy Xmas and New Year thank goodness I will be home for the next one 5 away now it seems so funny thinking about it I believe we get 6 months pay and allowances when we get our discharge I am scared thinking about getting into civies again. I may have something interesting to tell you in a few days but I dont want to speak to soon there is many a slip between the cup and the lip but I expect the M.C. to come through I know that I am in for it I will have quite a breast before I am finished I am glad that I came back I got the M.M. for the day I got wounded in Cambrai for the work I did there also got recommended for the M.C. as well I will now close hoping to hear from you soon and hope to be back again before long to the wifie and bairns no more wars for me
Your Loving Hubbie
Jim

Note from Jane Sherris: This is one of several letters written by RSM James Kay during WW1 to his wife Annie Kay in Winnipeg. It is not his handwriting but the spelling and punctuation are as written. I hope the letters will give you a feel for the time period.
We would like to thank Jane Sherris for her generousity in allowing the use of her great-grandfather's story, photos, and all sections of the memorial she has to James on her webpage at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/9402. Please visit Jane's site for more information
Note from Lorine: James Kay is one of the soldiers found on Veteran's Affairs Canada Virtual War Memorial. He is also found in the
