Dear Sir, Will write you again in regard to my Pension Claim. Children No 575889. Co I, 50 Reg. MO Inf Vol.

Will you please inform me whether the evidence I sent you was sufficient proof of my sister Rosetta J. birth or not-- I done the best I could as there was no attending physicial and the midwife is dead and there were no Public Records kept and the Church records have bin destroyed. But I know my sister neverwas aever Crisened in to any Church. I can prove all these there facts but I hope the evidence I have sent you are sufficient--for it is so far to Gasconade Co that it will cost so much and I am not able to go now. I have bin sick for bout a month that I havent bin able to work any. I also have a little girl that has been very sick the last too weeks. I hope you wont but any thing on me only what has to be done but if there is any thing that has to be done I hope you will let me know it at once so I can get it done at once. If you have any doubt to my honesty send your pension examiner out to see me and you will find out that I am telling you the truth. Hoping you will do all you can for me and as soon as possible. I will close. Be sure and let me know at once.

Notes: Henry Newton Mahanay B: 2 Feb 1872 in Bourbon, MO. He was the son of Jobe M. Mahanay (A Civil War soldier) and Manerva Stites Mahanay. Henry was three years old when his father died from an "affliction of the kidneys" he developed while in the Mo Vol. The original pension claim was filed in 1893 and denied one year later because the children did not file for benefits until after they reached the age of 16. No notification was sent to the family when the original claim was denied. The attorney, J.W. Morris, wrote an appeal and the decision was reversed and the claim was sent for reconsideration. The claim was eventually denied but the process took over ten years before the children "gave up" on any help from the Government. Henry's mother, Manerva Stites Mahanay, died in 1877 just two years after her husband's death. Francis M, Rosetta J. and Henry N. Mananay were orphaned after their mother's death and were raised by their sister, Martha, and her husband Rev. John F. Hethcock.
