Henry Newton Mahanay, Letters 1898

October 12, 1898

Cuba, MO

Mr. J.W. Morris (attorney representing family in pension claim)

Dear Sir,

Will write you again in Regard to my Pension Claim Childrens No. 575889 CO I, 50 Reg. MO Inf Vol.

As I had so much hard luck at Kirkwood I got dishartened and moved back to Cuba. My little girl died July 27 and the little baby died September the 7th. My wife has heart-trouble so I have had nothing but trouble for the last year and have had a hard time to make a living. I have wished many a time I could get my pension but my wishes were in vane but I hope you will examine my claim at once and consider it in my favor at once. I know my claim is justly due us and I know we kneed it worse than any one on earth. I hope you will do the best you can for us and write me at once and let me know what you can do for us and whether the evidence I have furnished are sufficient or not. The weather is so bad now that I cant get anything to do and I am in hard sircumstances and would like to hear from you at once. Hopingt you will consider our claim a just one. Write me at once.

I remain Yours Truly,

Henry N. Mahanay

Cuba, Crawford, MO

I have moved back to Cuba and would like to have my address changed back to Cuba, MO. My brother Francis M and sister Rosetta J's address will still be Kirkwood. I hope you will do the best you can for me and have my claim called up as often as you can.

I remain Yours Truly, Henry N. Mahanay Cuba, MO

The following letter was logged into the pension office on Oct 22, 1898 and was stamped "Complaint" October 19, 1898 Cuba, MO Mr. H. Clay Evans Washington D.C.

Notes: Henry Newton Mahanay B: 2 Feb 1872 in Bourbon, MO. He was the son of Jobe M. Mahanay (A Civil War soldier) and Manerva Stites Mahanay. Henry was three years old when his father died from an "affliction of the kidneys" he developed while in the Mo Vol. The original pension claim was filed in 1893 and denied one year later because the children did not file for benefits until after they reached the age of 16. No notification was sent to the family when the original claim was denied. The attorney, J.W. Morris, wrote an appeal and the decision was reversed and the claim was sent for reconsideration. The claim was eventually denied but the process took over ten years before the children "gave up" on any help from the Government. Henry's mother, Manerva Stites Mahanay, died in 1877 just two years after her husband's death. Francis M, Rosetta J. and Henry N. Mananay were orphaned after their mother's death and were raised by their sister, Martha, and her husband Rev. John F. Hethcock.
